Book Report-- The Deliberate Church

The Deliberate Church G, L
by Mark Dever and Paul Alexander

Non-fiction

I have truly appreciated this book. Simply, it offer some of the simplest and best explanations of the church I've read. Dever and Alexander were deliberately simple, avoiding ministry "models" or formulas, relying instead on God's Word for a handbook for the church.
Specifically, I learned greatly from the short chapter on music. Assuming a correct understanding of music itself, they undertake to explain how music in the worship service specifically can and can't glorify God.
Oddly enough, I also benefited from their description of offices, as I would disagree about biblically mandated offices. Still, they offered one of the best understandings of the biblical role of deacons I've heard. They also were vigorously clear that they believe specialization (music department, youth pastor, pastor of Christian Ed.) results in too much compartmentalization, whereas the church and the ministry are intended to be full-orbed.
