The Shocking Reality of the War on Terror

I just read (and subscribed to) Joel Rosenberg's blog. Even for an optimist and (I hope) a realist regarding our War on Terror and world politics in general, the information he shares is shocking.

For instance, the first article I read listed everything that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the mastermind of 9/11, confessed to. It's a list of 31 attempted and successful terrorist attacks across the globe. I had never heard that some of the attacks happened or that some targets were almost struck.

That shocks me in two ways:

Even beyond what I thought I knew was happening and could happen, they are after us. I did not know they had planned attacks on the Sears tower, Big Ben, the NYSE, Jimmy Carter, etc. I knew that jihad was inherent in Islam and that it is widespread, but it still shocks me to hear it.

I am also shocked to see how many of the intended attacks never succeeded. That has to mean that the terrorists are incompetent or that we, or, more accurately, our military and other agencies are doing their job. Shocking, huh?

Why is it so shocking? This reality is simply ignored, stifled, twisted, butchered, reversed and any (other possible negative verb) by our media and our culture.
