It's clearly stated by most Biblical Counseling proponents that fundamental to the philosophy is the radical sufficiency of the Scriptures. That is to say that in any case in life in which man finds himself asking a question, God's Word has an answer. That is not to say, though, that just stating that God says not to be angry is the cure for anger. Nor will offering joyful, happy thoughts to "put on" in the place of angry thoughts do the trick. If that were so, the critical label "biblical behaviorism" would be all too accurate. Instead, the sufficient Scriptures simultaneously offer the guidelines for the best-lived life and prove the reason that we can't live it --ourselves. If we can't change ourselves, even given the right steps, then only God can.
Radical sufficiency of the Scriptures, therefore, becomes radical dependence upon and sufficiency in Christ. It is only because of the Cross that we have a new heart that can be changed.
In truth, sufficiency in Scriptures and sufficiency in Christ are not very different concepts. Not only does Scripture reveal Christ, but Christ is the embodiment of Scriptures. Christ is the Word.
