Genre: War, Action, Drama
Summary: A colonial man decides between defending his family and defending his soon-to-be-country and decides both.
My Grade: actually uncertain, varies everytime I watch it
Pros:
- Excellent portrayal of colonial life and political struggle.
- Great family emphasis.
- Good action, despite some harsher images.
- Raises good questions of self-defense and the limits to violence.
- According to my reseach, the historicity of the war crimes central to the movie is in question.
- Some gratuitous violence.
- The politics still throw my mind into a spin. The most recent time I watched this (July 6, 08), I tend to agree with his politics at the beginning of the movie. I do not necessarily agree that the Revolutionary War was biblically justified, but I will appreciate the sacrifice of those (portrayed in this movie) who brought it about for my benefit (see post on Patriotism for further questions).
