The Hobbit A
by J.R.R. Tolkien
Fiction/Fantasy
For anyone, if at all possible, who does not know, this is the prequel to the epic trilogy Lord of the Rings. It details the story of Bilbo Baggins and his un-Hobbit-like adventure with the dwarves.
Bilbo is obviously the main character, while he plays just a small role in The Fellowship of the Ring and the Return of the King. The dwarf horde includes a few characters mentioned but not involved in the Trilogy, such as Balin and Gloin. Gollum is revealed, but only in part. Gandalf and Elrond are briefly involved as well, which is always good. Also, many new characters are introduced, such as Beorn, Thorin, Smaug, and Bard.
It is a great background to the Trilogy, but stands alone as a story itself. It sets the stage for the trilogy without being a part of it. Notably, the association of men, dwarves, and elves is created by Bilbo's masterful politics. Gollum's game with Bilbo is epically interesting and masterful.
